At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales through the solo tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.

However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome plan.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One day he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid here screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
